PARLIAMENTARY NEWS THE PHILIPPINES

A. ACTIVITIES OF THE PHILIPPINE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

The following are the significant events that took place in the history of the Philippine House of Representatives to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the House of Representatives and the 30th anniversary of AIPO :

1.    Speaker Jose de Venecia, Jr. led the planting of the Centennial Tree in front of the main entrance of the House of Representatives main building in Quezon City on October 16, 2007. The tree commemorated the 100 years of lawmaking of the House of Representatives. An exhibit on the history of the House of Representatives was unveiled on October 9, 2007. On the 100th anniversary of the House of Representatives on October 16, 2007, a program was held at the old Ayutamiento in Manila, site of the nascent House of Representatives. Later on that day, the Speaker Jose de Venecia’s corner was inaugurated at the Legislative Library and Archives.

2.   Following the blast that wreaked havoc in the House of Representatives’ South Wing Lobby on November 13, 2007, the activity highlighting the presentation of the Photo Exhibit of the history of Philippine House Members participation in the AIPO in the last three (3) decades was postponed to a later date.

B. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES

1. The Second Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) Executive Council Meeting and the Second Session of the   APA Plenary held in Tehran, Iran on November 17-21, 2007, was attended by Speaker Jose de Venecia and 4 other Members of the Philippine House of Representatives, to wit:

1.   Hon. Roque R. Ablan, Jr.

2.   Hon. Ma. Esperanza Milagros H. Magsaysay

3.   Hon. Edwin C. Uy

4.   Hon. Eduardo C. Zialcita

2. Speaker Jose de Venecia and Congressman Eduardo C. Zialcita attended the 8th Standing Committee Meeting of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties held on November 22-23, 2007 in Tehran, Iran.

3. The  following House Members attended the Senate’s hosting of the 1st Global Parliamentarians Meeting on HIV/AIDS on 28-30 November 2007 at the Manila Hotel:
